Accessibility

Every guest deserves a full welcome at 47th and King Drive. This page explains what to expect when you visit and how to request the support you need. If your question is not answered here, call us at (773) 373-1900 and a member of our team will help.

Our Commitment

The Harold Washington Cultural Center serves the whole community, and accessibility is part of how we honor that responsibility. Our house staff is here to assist guests of all abilities, from the front door to your seat.

We ask one thing in return: tell us what you need, ideally in advance. The more we know before you arrive, the better your visit will be.

Mobility and Seating

If you use a wheelchair, a walker, or simply prefer to limit stairs, call the box office at (773) 373-1900 before you purchase tickets. Tell us what you need and we will work with you to arrange seating in our 1,000-seat theater and the easiest route from the entrance to your seat.

Our parking lot sits immediately south of the building. If you would like someone to meet you at the entrance, ask when you call and we will tell you what we can arrange.

Restrooms

Any usher or staff member can direct you to the nearest restroom when you arrive. If restroom accessibility is a concern for your visit, call us in advance at (773) 373-1900 and we will walk you through what to expect.

Hearing

If you or someone in your party is deaf or hard of hearing, contact us before your visit, two weeks ahead where possible. We will talk through the support available for your specific performance, including seating closer to the stage.

Vision

Guests who are blind or have low vision are welcome at every performance and event. Call us in advance and we will reserve seating that fits your needs, describe the building layout before you arrive, and talk through how we can guide you from the entrance to your seat.

Service Animals

Trained service animals are welcome throughout the building. If you are attending with a service animal, let the box office know when you book so we can seat you and your animal comfortably.

Sensory

Live theater can include bright lights, loud music, and sudden sound. If you or a family member has a sensory sensitivity, call before your visit and we will tell you what to expect from the specific show. We can also help you choose seating near an exit, so stepping out for a quiet moment is easy.

Companions and Caregivers

If you attend with a companion or caregiver, we will do everything we can to seat you together. Mention it when you book through the box office and we will take care of the rest.
